Meet Spotlight: The Inaugural Cal Benefit Cup

Posted: Jan 12 2015

January 9th-11th, 2015, Berkeley, CA.
As a great weekend of gymnastics comes to a close, we reflect on the impact the new Cal Benefit Cup is going to have not only the Cal Men's Gymnastics program, but for the entire gymnastics community in the region.
Huge praise must go to head Coach Brett McClure and assistant JT Okada who worked tirelessly with a board of directors and volunteers to create an event which raises money for the program to continue the 103-year legacy that is Cal Men's Gymnastics for future generations.
Over 450 Junior Olympic gymnasts took over Cal's impressive Haas Pavilion, more regularly home to the Cal Basketball teams. It's not everyday a gymnast gets to compete in a 12,000 seated stadium, making it a very special occasion for gymnasts and families alike. During the weekend, Turn launched it's Century Club, laying down the challenge for gymnasts: 100 circles on mushroom in 1 turn will gain you access to the club and a free t-shirt to proudly wear. Two gymnasts completed the challenge, Zachary Martin of Elevate Gymnastics and Alden Cocanour of Gymnastics Nevada. Watch this space for news of the Century Club's online platform launch that will allow you to upload a video of you performing 100 or more circles to become a member and get your tee.
On Saturday night, Cal took to the floor to compete against Bay Area rivals Stanford, while two squads of Level 10 qualifiers had the experience of competing alongside them. Stanford won with 429.05, over four points clear of Cal in front an enthusiastic crowd. It was a fantastic headline event and participants are already looking forward to next years meet.
