The Weekly All-Around

Week 6, 2025

A week off for all NCAA teams, but an even more important weekend for gymnastics. The first senior elite competition of the year, an epic battle of regions in the Junior Elite Team Cup,  and a national team was declared. Here are the biggest takeaways:

Loos Emerges

Riley Loos is your 2025 Winter Cup All-Around Champion! Loos is an athlete who had a great career at Stanford, yet he believed he had more in the tank after his 2023 graduation. Last year, he began his elite career, but this is certainly his most impressive feat competing as an individual. Timing matters a lot in this sport, and Loos picked a great day to have a great day. Twice. Along with the AA gold, he placed first on floor and rings as well. Loos also has a 5.2 difficulty vault that could certainly compete in any World Championship or Olympic lineup. Through both days of competition this weekend, Riley certainly upheld his personal standard of “staying loose.”

Young Guns Impress

This year’s Winter Cup gave many gymnastics fans new names and faces of athletes that are simply remarkable. In the last 3-4 years, the talent produced out of high school has grown exponentially compared to previous years. It is a true sign that gymnastics around the country is being taken seriously and it is more confirmation that we are on an upward trend. Here are All-Around standings of some athletes, all aged 20 or younger:

  • 5th place: Jun Iwai (19, Texas Dreams)

  • 6th place: Drake Andrews (20, Ohio State University)

  • 7th place: Sasha Bogonosiuk (19, Gymkhana)

  • 8th place: Alexandru Nitache (19, University of Nebraska)

  • 10th place: Nathan Roman (18, Agility)

Aside from the All-Around, these two athletes won impressive event titles:

  • Pommel Horse: Brandon Dang (19, University of Illinois)

  • Vault: Nartey Brady (17, Eagle Ridge)

Don’t forget, silver AA medalist Frederick Richard is also only 20 years old, as is Paris Olympian Asher Hong who did not compete. Also worth noting is 19-year-old Kai Uemura who was selected to the National Team, and 17-year-old Danila Leykin. Leykin totalled a 76.400 in day one, and was unable to compete floor or rings in day two. A replicated all-around score would have had Leykin finish in 9th place.

Senior National Team

Shortly after the end of competition, USAG announced its 2025 Men’s Senior National Team, Injured Reserve Athletes, and Senior Developmental Team Athletes. This can be found below.

Elite Team Cup

At each Winter Cup, there is an annual Elite Team Cup, where junior athletes get selected to represent their region, and the regions battle each other in a team competition format. This year’s winner is Region 3! A squad full of Texas athletes, with five of the eight members representing Cypress Academy. Parallel Bars proved to be a true strength for this region, with a team total at 73.900, nearly 2 points higher than the next best team. This team’s only all-around competitor was Kiefer Hong, who placed 4th individually. The top 3 individual all-around placements were Adam Lakomy (Region 6), Alex Noel (Region 6), and Eli Osuna (Region 4). Lakomy and Osuna will compete for the University of Michigan, and Noel has plans to become an Oklahoma Sooner.

About Aiden

Hello gymnastics fans! I’m Aiden and I’m super excited to join the team at TURN as the 'Principal Staff Writer'. I began competing gymnastics at the age of six and immediately fell in love with the sport. I am currently in the midst of my senior season as a competitor, serving my third year as a team captain for the Georgia United GymACT team. Last December, I graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, with Sports Media Certification as well. I've already acquired a few years of media experience, working a variety of roles with GymACT, Virtius, and Neutral Deductions. In addition to competing, I am an active women’s team coach at Oconee Gymnastics Center, as well as the Technical Director of the Georgia Men’s Gymnastics Judging Association. Evidently — even though I am competing, coaching, and judging — I can never get enough of this sport, so I’m excited to take this new role as well!
